• Word Lens: Just point your camera to a sign or text and the Translate app will instantly translate the text, even without Internet/data connection. Currently available in: English ↔ French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish.
I don't think it works for Japanese.

Not trying to be rude but... Learn Katakana, people. I assure you that it will come in handy as hell.

I don't want to be harsh on this but is not polite to tell others what to learn. The topic of this thread it's just an assisting tool. Each person can used it as they see fit. Everyone learns at different speed and in different ways. I learned hiragana and katakana in a couple hours, but still use different tools to assist my lack of practice. Foreign languages are a bi%&$ to keep in your head fresh.

You can encourage people to learn but looking down on those who use assisting apps (and implying that they are too lazy to learn) is a really horrible move.

I don't 'look down' on the respective people. I simply tell the alternative to make things easier, as what the assisting apps are supposed to do. Also, learning katakana is not like learning the whole language itself, so it's not like I'm asking them for a labor. Please do not make a fuss about this.

If you want to keep using translation apps, that's fine. If you're too lazy to learn it, that's fine. We're just suggesting to also learn Katakana alongside using the app so that you won't have to bust out your phone for practically everything including extremely small stuff that could have simply been a demon's name.

Labelling people who won't learn katakana as lazy is unacceptable, and well, wrong. What vin and akashanotenshi pointed out has appeared to have been misunderstood, people who don't want to endeavour in learning a language (or even the script) are not lazy, as learning a new language can be INCREDIBLY STRENUOUS. This thread is to help those who perhaps cannot due to time constraints etc... by giving people a tool to assist in understanding what is going on in megaten. Respect to akashanotenshi and vin for the mature responses. The necro of an old thread was pointless, especially considering all it did was start an argument.
Rant over.

"Having time constraint is the most unoriginal excuse for not learning," my professor said. I can assure you that 'time constraint' is not a really good argument in this case, as we're talking about an app that could take up your time while you're playing an MMORPG. Moreover, the person above said that it only took a couple of hours for them to learn Kana. Please understand that what we stated was not to look down, insult, or judge people in any way. We simply let you know that there is another alternative way that can conveniently help you in-game, like the purpose of this thread itself. I hope no more unnecessary fussing will be flaming in this thread.

This has quickly turned the wrong way. This is the last I'll write here and I hope it is enough to stop this without locking this place.
Just because I can learn something absurdly fast, I don't expect others to do so. I even expect them to not learn at all. It's just as plausible. Some people simply don't have much time available and they just want to enjoy their game. Learning a foreign language is, in most cases, not part of and average person's life schedule. I very much prefer players to use any trick at their disposal to run trough the game than straining their heads on a language that is very hard to learn. Some people learn on the go, some people doesn't. It is as simple as that.

So does katakana = entire language to everyone now? Lol it's not even something you actively learn unless you wanted to, people just memorize over time while playing. Well, let's just let ppl use w/e they want to get by in this game
