learning a new language can be INCREDIBLY STRENUOUS. Have you considered that katakana isn't the whole language? It's just an alphabet. Also the EASIEST for english speakers to learn because it's all about english words. The app is helpful to a certain extent, to make things easier for you guys learning the simple "alphabets" shouldn't be strenuous at all.

Eh, I agree that learning kana is obviously the best option, but I also understand that there can be reasons why people may not be as prone to picking things up - for example, if you're already studying another language, sometimes it can be actively unhelpful to attempt to learn another at the same time, depending on how your brain works. I was in immersion French middle school but as also taking Spanish and hearing some Spanish at home (my parents were fluent by I am not), and the end result was the two languages totally melding together and getting messy in my brain. I eventually stopped training either because I could never recall the right language on demand, my brain simply refused to discern the two. I do have a learning disability that makes memory and retention very challenging, though, so that may explain why it was harder (and why I took longer to learn and retain katakana than the people in this thread).
I understand frustration with people if you think they are not progressing as fast as you wish they would, but this tool seems like a stopgap measure to help people who haven't yet learned or, like myself, have issues with memory. For me, I found doing my DCM to be the best way to learn, but until it clicked for me (and as said before, it took me a lot more repetition for me to retain kana than it probably would take someone without my particular brand of brain problems) what's the problem with using a tool? Learning an entirely new alphabet can be a challenge for some people and at first it's just a sea of unfamiliar symbols. This helps until you start recognizing them, I doubt anyone uses it as a long term solution simply because if you play the game long enough, at some point it will absorb naturally (as Ink mentioned).
I don't think there's anything wrong with encouraging people to learn kana as it does make managing the game easier by magnitudes, but I also don't understand why this thread was necroed just to leave an abrasive remark about people who choose to use the app. What was the purpose? Just to stir up a hostile conversation? Were you bored? I know I'm contributing to it by replying and so congrats if that was the goal, but really... lol. We're a small enough community as it is, why fracture it by being unnecessarily rude?
I think it's a good idea to just give resources and maybe skip this kind of pressure/judgement as I don't understand how it benefits anyone. People will do what works best for them, if it's different from you the world will not end.
ETA: And lbr, at least someone downloading this app is showing some type of initiative to figure things out on their own. Compared to the people who want every single thing translated for them and feel entitled to everyone else's time/hand-holding, that's not something to complain about xD

This has quickly turned the wrong way. This is the last I'll write here and I hope it is enough to stop this without locking this place. Just because I can learn something absurdly fast, I don't expect others to do so. I even expect them to not learn at all. It's just as plausible. Some people simply don't have much time available and they just want to enjoy their game. Learning a foreign language is, in most cases, not part of and average person's life schedule. I very much prefer players to use any trick at their disposal to run trough the game than straining their heads on a language that is very hard to learn. Some people learn on the go, some people doesn't. It is as simple as that. Well, sorry if that grind your gears. I just wanted to emphasize my point.

I posted here to say this: Just... Appreciate the topic. This thread is all about the awesome tool Baburu referred to us. It is rather sad that the intention of this thread is overlooked. I agree of what Tico said. Everyone have their own different levels of learning capabilities. And for one, we need to be more lenient about not everyone are either capable or even willing to learn. Thus, the point of this topic. Not to be rude: But no matter how good we are in Japanese (or any skills in that regard), if it doesn't even help the others, then its pointless posting it here. The thread's intention is to help the others, this topic can go on without any hint of claiming or self praising what you can do or judging others for what they can't do. *cough cough* I don't diss you guys. But let's respect the Topic Starter's good intentions. Out of Topic: To those who wants something chill ->

Oh yes, this thread was incidentally brought back to 'life' when I started my post here, but I would like to state that in no way did I have any intention to bring down the others. I was simply offering a suggestion of other alternatives that could help you in-game. No really, that is like the main point why people use the app. Gosh, I didn't even think that something with level katakana would be this worth getting worked up for. People fussed as if I was asking them for a labor. This is my last post in this thread.

Well, I mean... nobody really needs anyone to point out that learning the language, or even aspects of it, will make the game easier. Since it seems pointless to pop into a dead thread and drop a Captain Obvious post, that's why a few of us read a different intent in your post. To be blunt, there are some players in the community who clearly base a lot of their self-worth on their ability to condescend to others about things that really have no meaning, so it's an easy conclusion to draw. I guess I have an itchy trigger finger since I find those types beyooooond obnoxious/pathetic and have been hearing/seeing it a lot lately. My sincere apologies if I misread you. Not being sarcastic or anything, it's the joy of the internet and the reason I use way too many smilies and shit when I type - I've had my tone misinterpreted a lot before, too. My bad. Don't need to reply, I just wanted to say sorry for jumping the gun @ you

Hello! This app works fine with me. But comparing to other languages, you have to make sure that you take a good photo of it. I suggest you is if you can configure your camera to do an HD picture, do it so. And since all the characters in the game are too small and jumbled together, you can also use 'Sticky Notes' to cover the areas in the game that you don't need to translate. This way, it will make better results.

The thread's purpose was to share a tool that can help players overcome language barriers. I think encouraging people to learn Katakana is fine, but implying they "should" is not. There's absolutely no point in stating that it's better than using some translation app on your smartphone... I believe everyone's bright enough to realize that being able to read Katakana yourself is more practical than having to rely on a program to read it in pictures for you. I can assure you that 'time constraint' is not a really good argument in this case, as we're talking about an app that could take up your time while you're playing an MMORPG. Most people here likely don't have any practical use for Katakana in their lives outside of this game, so I find it condescending to discredit any reasons one might have for not wanting to learn an entire alphabet. I didn't see any malice in your thread bump, but the subsequent discussion was a little iffy. Opting to lock this thread. If people want to encourage others to learn Katakana, creating a thread with the intent of facilitating that task would be the helpful route.
