Hello everyone! I have recently started a new character on the JP server and I'm looking for some advice. Back in the English server I played an Enhancer but now I decided to start a Melee character. So far I've worked my expertise so I can have Class 6 Retaliation but I'm a bit lost with the rest of my expertise. One of my friends had heard the Pursuit was a really good expertise and that I should give it a try. I'm not too sure about it, personally I want to train Spin but I'm also not entirely sure what to do. So that's my Question is Pursuit worth it? I appreciate all the help. Thank you

Note that I have not raised Pursuit, and thus I'd like anyone who knows more to give some better information.
Pursuit is a direct damage buff to all damage. Every time to deal damage, a number is rolled and there's a chance that you deal a second attack that deals a percentage based off the original strike. This second attack is applied automatically and doesn't have any additional animation besides the damage number rolling above the enemy's head.
What makes Pursuit interesting is the fact that the numbers can roll up high. At first it starts abysmally low, but by class 9 you get a high chance to deal an additional 30% of the original strike. 30% doesn't sound too big, but the numbers add up fast. Especially if you can hit 9999+, where Pursuit basically gives you a free 3k extra damage.
Also to note is that you can actually apply elements to the second attack using toggles from the Pursuit expertise, allowing you to abuse any and all elements/affinities to deal #tonsofdamage to enemies.
Of course, nine whole classes worth of expertise training isn't easy or cheap, but perhaps it'll be worth it.

there are also certain gears and soulstones that increse pursuit dmg, but they're super expensive
also, the activation chance is pretttttty low til you get c7, and even then, its only 1% per 1o main stat (str/mag/spd/int c1) then 1o per dmg stat (clsr/lngr/spell/support c7) gettin 25o spd and 25o lngr for 5o% chance isnt easy.
also, grinding it is a bitch, and in your case, raising pursuit is most likely for the rampage chain, which is really good

I should've mentioned this earlier, but what about the demon skill Hot Pursuit 1/2?
Do we have any specific numbers for these skills? And are they worth keeping on an end-game demon?

Thank you guys for your input. It helps a lot. Also I have a question that is a bit different from the OP but I hope someone could give me some advice. Is it worth to go to Attack Class 9 for Gatling Strike? I'm currently at Class 8 and I don't know if Class 9 is worth the grind. Any tips? I'm not sure exactly what Gatling Strike does so if anyone could let me know that'd be awesome too.

its 5% chance and 5% dmg and then 5% chance and 1o% dmg for 1/2 respectively. not worth it unless you stack TA gear.
c9 is essentially a stronger version of c5, slightly more dmg and 1 more hit in. for normal mobs i guess its fine if your dmg is on the lower end, but for bosses, heavy strike or armour break would be better since they have a higher tolerance to knockback or outright null it.
otoh, increasing the class gives more dmg anyways, and depending on your chains, you might need c9 atk to hit certain ranks
edit: forgot to mention, but pursuit =/= TA. well, the demon one is slightly misleading since it actually gives TA chance/dmg. to my knowledge, the only pursuit dmg for demons was one of kotori's kappa buffs
anyways, for players, if you go pursuit and get TA gear, they wont add together, instead, they're their own separate systems and will proc individually (so if you buff hard enough, 3ok+3ok+3ok hits are possible, and 18ok+18ok+18ok if you intensive break...)

Ok I'm having problems understanding how Pursuit works from the formula Wiki says on first switch: The pursuit of enlightenment that only those who continue to pursue may remember. When switch skill is enabled the chance of additional damage is increased in accordance with the appropriate values (1% of original damage). ((0.1 * Stat) Pursuit chance) So let's do the math 9999 Original damage 1% of that: 99.99 Then... ((0.1 * 250 magic (or base stat?) Pursuit chance) So, 25% damage of dealing extra 99.99 damage on every 9999 hit? Then, the pasives that increases the pursuit damage, those are fairly easy to understand, but when it comes to elements I don't really get it "The pursuit of mantra that only those who continue to pursue may remember. Pursuit damage becomes the appropriate affinity. " Then once again in class 7 it says the same formula "((0.1 * Stat) Pursuit chance" so.... what's the difference between c1 and c7?

Changing affinities will increase/decrease damage based on the enemy's resistances.
The difference between the C1 and C7 skills is the stat that it uses to calculate pursuit chance.

I'm sorry for asking this over and over but I just don't get it :/ If I'm a mage... then c1 uses my magic, and c7 my magic again? I don't get it For mages it's the same on c1 and c7?

I'm sorry for asking this over and over but I just don't get it :/ If I'm a mage... then c1 uses my magic, and c7 my magic again? I don't get it For mages it's the same on c1 and c7? C1 uses the attributes (STR, MAG, SPD) while c7 uses stat (clrng, lnrng, spl). For example, if you are a mage and have 150 MAG and 200spl, at c1 pursuit you'll have only 150*0.1 = 15% chance to get pursuit damage, while at c7, you'll have 150*0.1 + 200*0.1 = 30% chance to get pursuit damage. The 1% pursuit damage at c1 and c7 is... just there so that you won't hit zero pursuit damage even if you have chance XD It is the passive skills at c2, c4, c8 and c9 that give extra pursuit damage (max +25%). In short, with the attribute/stat mentioned above, after you max pursuit you'll get a 30% chance to hit a 27% extra damage in propotion to you original damage. Certain gears give pursuit chance/damage too, e.g the new Setsu/Azura clothes (unmixed +20%chance/50%power, mixed +30%chance/50%power), yellow DBOR-BLACK piece (+10%chance/5%power), Jetpack Plus (+30%power) etc. But those tend to be uber costly so raising attributes/stat is the way to go :3 On another note, can anyone confirm on whether attribute/stat boost via Digitalise increases Pursuit chance? P.s to Vooky: It's totally Ok to be confused, the way damage works in SMT has never been simple haha :3 I happen to be experiementing with a LB regal pursuit rapid too, we'll figure these things out together
