Hi! I recently returned to Megaten after along absence (when the EN servers closed) and I'm starting a melee character to begin with. I used to have a LB/Counter melee on the EN server but the thing is, I'm a little confused on how to make the most out of a melee here on JP with the new expertises and chain expertises. I'm assuming C6 Retal is still essential? Would Pursuit and Rampage or Crushing Technique and Condition of Melee be better? For that matter would a LB/Counter melee even be viable any more at 'end game'? ( i will get there again at some point) I'd love to here any input from the more experienced JP players here on what builds you would suggest for a melee now (counter or not, doesn't matter... I just want a very capable and fun melee char at the end of it) and the pros and cons of certain builds and expertises. I know it's a lot of questions but i really need to start planning my expertise out before i can level any further right now. Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing your advice and opinions

For end game you'll want to be a rapid melee with the pursuit expertise, technical attack gear, lb gear. Theres a cls-r weapon-based rapid skill from a pair of cash shop gloves you'll want to save up for. TA is the red extra damage, and pursuit is the orange extra damage in this video:
It also shows the rapid skill you'll want to get.
You can still go counter since I think the total expertise cap is 51k now but it takes a lot of work to get all the cap increases. Also I think they buffed up the bonuses from retal so its very useful.

C4 Retaliation C2 Attack C8 WK C1 ST C2.5 Enhancement C2 Curative Magic C4 Support Magic C1 Bless Then having a stat build of base 90STR 90INT 30LUC I would really suggest to have this kind of build because they are one of the safe build I know if you want to be a melee. Increasing it further won't give you a much boost(a C6 Retaliation won't be able to give much, not even a 10% boost), all of it are going to rely on gears. Most of your skills are gear dependent too. (Pulse Impact, Overture(Angel's Trumpet), Punishment Whip, Nemurientsuki) <- This are just are some of my preferred skills, they work well in many ways. I also want to say that going for player damage class Isn't very friendly in terms of macca but hell they're really OP. Lastly if you're done with everything get C5 Pursuit

tsie: That looks like something to aim towards but getting all that gear is probably going to take me forever lol. I'll probably start with pursuit and add TA equipment and the gloves later if i can. Any idea what the gloves are called/ a link to them? ayserunia: Only C2 attack? No need for armor break or heavy attack any more as well as the extra buffs? And as for the C6 retal I mentioned that as it was the lord of victory toggle i was interested in more than the others. Again, is this not important any more?

Actually it doesnt take that long to get macca from events if youre lucky. The gloves are called 夜叉丸手甲 which gooogle translates to yasha round gloves. Heres the page with their stats megatenonline.wiki.fc2.com/wiki/%E8%85%95%EF%BC%9ACP%E5%93%81Theres 3 version of the gloves. Also if you can, try and do the current event. The drop from the first boss is a soul stone that gives null knockback, interrupt, and +500 hp if chaos. There are npcs that fight for you.

Again, is this not important any more? yes, you can add armor break if you want for some cases, no need to get heavy attack, as for lord of victory i would not recommend it as it gives you 20% additional received damage which is very bad especially at end game dungeons/raids/runs which most likely 1hko or 2-4 hits you
