I already made an account with a character on Cerb, but im just wondering how possible it is to play on JP without knowing a whole lot of the written text. Sorry if its a stupid question, im just wondering how far you can get like that. Not to mention how to respond if someone PMs me. Is it hopeless?
Thanks for any feedback.

well as for me. its all "click all" and see what happens and I use sesshou's wiki for some reference. There's a thread here that lists all the basic japanese words that some beginner's need to know. you'll get hang of it soon enough

I wouldn't be too concerned about the language barrier.
If you are familiar with the basic functions of the EN version, then there isn't a whole lot that's different. As far as interacting with things for events and new quests, don't be afraid to ask clannies questions. When I first started I would do clan runs only knowing to click: option 4, option 1, option 1, option 1... no idea what I was picking, but it got me where I needed to go.
There are people here who can translate a bit and pass on the knowledge for us. Make use of the JP wiki (some things on Sess wiki may not be accurate). Even with google translate it's helpful. Also pay mind to posts in the guides for basic Japanese translations. There's a useful Katakana chart that I've started using to get by as well. Before long you'll even start to learn some probably (isn't learning fun?!).
I've never been PM'd in Japanese. I'm sure if you respond in English with "I'm sorry, I do not understand" it should politely get the message across.
Otherwise, just be mindful of differences in social etiquette. I see many people having trouble with that. It's a new experience playing on JP server, but it's still lots of fun!

Something I did in the past when I used to play with demyx was that if I wanted to try to get party members for harder runs was to post it up in the Party Finder, using Google Translate to pick the right selections for what I wanted to do. Then, in the comments field, I'd type something like "Sorry, I only know English/Español." There were times when I wouldn't get a party for anything, but there were others when bored people would help out. Megaten really isn't one of those games where you need to be able to communicate with party members for the most party (except for, say, diaspora and other end-game content), so long as you have a basic idea of what you're doing. Trial and error for menus can net you some funny results though.
